Those two elements are reunited in the tree-trunk
and come together to form the tree.
When the knot of three is undone 154,
how many reflections emerge!
You see evil and good warring in the heart,
the father and mother in conflict over the child.
You find the blacksmith on the one side, his tools on the other.
But they must come together before iron can be smelted;
just as the man and woman must unite in order to reproduce.
Water in the sky and on earth
comes together in order for beings to be created
just as the two feet must alternate, to walk.
In the mysterious land of Kaydara,
oh Hammadi, the three 155 wells symbolize
two companions of equal quality
who join above an unfortunate creature
whom they skirt away from, and abandon to himself.
The two fortunate ones exchange
superfluous gifts;
between them a poor man
dies of wretchedness.
These are great lords
who play games with abundance
where a miserable neighbor may not enter.
Hammadi, you had seen only the signs
of the land of the dwarf-spirits.
The secret meaning of the tenth symbol
is now known to you.
It belongs to Kaydara,
the distant, the nearby Kaydara.
A great light shone and Hammadi spoke:
“And the eleventh symbol, what is its meaning?
I ask you, oh master who knows

Notes (Lilyan Kesteloot)
154. The knot of three: father and mother dispute the possession of the son; heaven and earth dispute the possession of vegetable growth; wealth and poverty dispute the possession of man.
155. The three wells in fact do not fulfill their function; two of them will exchange their waters without using up the third.
